Small grain in July in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania

SPRING OAT

Varieties

Choose a variety adapted to your area. On the average, the later maturing varieties should not be grown in Area 3 (Figure 1.7-1), because low bushel weight and poor grain quality may result. The earlier varieties are best for the warmer areas and perform well in other areas of the state.

Poor-quality seed may limit yield and crop performance because of low germination (less than 85 percent), excessive foreign material, weed seed, and seed of other varieties or crops. Certified seed offers the best assurance of quality.
