Part 1, Section 12: Farm Management: Enterprise Budgets
Farm Management: Enterprise Budgets
SAMPLE BUDGETS
Grain and forage sorghum budgets
- Receipts: For the sample budgets, yields of 100 bushels of grain sorghum and 23 tons of forage sorghum silage per acre are used. Grain sorghum is valued at $2.40 per bushel and forage sorghum silage at $20.50 per ton.
- Variable costs: Reduced tillage practices are assumed for the sorghum budgets. Seeding rates of 12 pounds per acre for grain sorghum and 10 pounds per acre for forage sorghum are used for the budgets. Labor is charged at $12 per hour and off-road diesel fuel at $2.25 per gallon. Fertilizer applied is 75-40-40 for grain sorghum and 150-50-40 for forage sorghum (you should adjust your costs to account for any manure applications in your own budgets). A yearly charge for 0.5 ton of lime is included in both budgets. For grain sorghum production, a drying charge of $0.24 per bushel is also included.
The weed management program includes a preplant application of commonly used herbicides and treatment of one-quarter of the acreage with a postemergence herbicide. No insecticide costs are included in the grain sorghum or forage sorghum budgets. The pesticides used for developing cost estimates are for example purposes only; see Part 2.3: Grain Sorghum Pest Management for a complete listing of recommended materials.
