Part 1, Section 12: Farm Management: Enterprise Budgets
Farm Management: Enterprise Budgets
SAMPLE BUDGETS
Small Grain Budgets
- Receipts: For the sample budgets, yields of 90 bushels per acre for oats, 100 bushels per acre for barley, and 75 bushels per acre for wheat—and prices of $4.30 per bushel for oats, $5.35 per bushel for barley, and $8.40 per bushel for wheat—are used. In addition, the budgets include receipts for sale of 1.0 tons of oat straw, 1.5 tons of barley straw, or 1.5 tons of wheat straw (valued at $125/ton.)
- Variable costs: No-till practices are assumed for the small grain budgets. Seeding rates of 3.25 bushels per acre for oats, 2.2 bushels per acre for barley, and 2 bushels per acre for wheat are used for the budgets. Labor is charged at $12.50 per hour and off-road diesel fuel at $4.20 per gallon. A 80-135-70 fertilizer for oats, 60-150-80 for barley, and 75-135-75 for wheat are assumed in the budgets (you should adjust your costs to account for any manure applications in your own budgets). A yearly charge for 0.5 ton of lime is included in both budgets. No insecticides or drying charges were included in the small grain budgets.
The weed management program for the small grains consists of a burndown application of glyphosate and spring application of commonly used herbicides. The pesticides used for developing cost estimates are for example purposes only; a complete list of recommended pesticides can be found in Part 2.5: Small Grains Pest Management.
