SAMPLE BUDGETS
Full-Season Soybean and Double-Crop Budgets
- Receipts: For the sample full-season soybean budget, a yield of 50 bushels per acre valued at $13.25 per bushel is used. For the double-crop sample budgets, yields of 100 bushels of barley and 40 bushels of soybeans per acre and 75 bushels of wheat and 30 bushels of soybeans per acre—and prices of $5.35 per bushel for barley, $8.40 per bushel for wheat, and $13.25 per bushel for soybeans—are used. In addition, 1.5 tons of barley straw and 1.5 tons of wheat straw (valued at $145/ton) are included in the budget receipts.
- Variable costs: No-till practices are assumed for both soybeans and small grains. A seeding rate of 1.0 bushel per acre is used for the full-season soybean budgets. Seeding rates of 2.2 bushels per acre for barley, 2.0 bushels per acre for wheat, and 1.25 buhels per acre for soybeans are used for the double crop budgets. Labor is charged at $12.50 per hour and off-road diesel fuel at $4.20 per gallon. Fertilizer rates are 0-40-60 for full-season soybeans, 80-100-190 for barley/soybeans, and 75-105-175 for wheat/soybeans. A yearly charge for 0.5 ton of lime is included in all budgets. No insecticides or drying charges were included in the soybean or double crop budgets.
Because glyphosate-tolerant varieties of soybeans are assumed to be planted, the herbicide program consists of burndown application of glyphosate and one postemergence application of glyphosate. The weed management program for the small grains in the double crop budgets consists of a burndown application of glyphosate and a spring application of commonly used herbicides.
