Several species of fungus beetles, including the foreign grain beetle, have increased in abundance in the past few years. These insects do little damage to the grain. They simply use the grain as a home, becoming most obvious in late summer and fall. Grain contamination from these insects can result in dockage, however, when the grain is sold.

The presence of fungus beetles in grain indicates a moisture and heating problem. Under these conditions, fungi grow and the beetles feed on them. Two things can be done to keep these beetles out of storages: eliminate fines, debris, screenings, etc., from the storage during filling, and keep the storage amply ventilated.
