Part 1, Section 4: Corn
Corn
Corn's high carbohydrate content makes it a high-energy feed. An average sample of corn grain contains 70.5 percent carbohydrate (starch), 9.6 percent protein, 0.33 percent P, 0.41 percent K and 4.4 percent oil. Approximately 56 percent of the corn grown in the United States is fed to livestock, 18 percent is exported, and 13 percent is made into ethanol. Most of the exported corn is used for livestock feed. The remaining 13 percent of the crop is used for food, alcohol, or industrial purposes.
