Part 1, Section 7: Small Grains
OTHER SMALL GRAINS
HARVEST
Cut when grain contains 14 percent or less moisture. Delaying harvest after grain has reached the desired harvest moisture and allowing it to rewet with showers or dew reduces bushel weight and grain quality in general. This is a major factor in low bushel weights. For wheat, harvesting at 17 to 18 percent moisture and drying can be an effective tactic for improving grain quality and aid in completing harvest earlier. Moisture content for storage should be 12 percent or less. Avoid excessive combine-cylinder speed as this can increase the broken kernels in the grain.
