NO-TILL FORAGE SEEDING

Fertilization

Use a soil test to determine lime and fertilizer needs for any no-till forage seeding. Note that the Penn State soil test information sheet contains a separate crop category for no-till forage seedings.

For seedings made in an old sod, take soil samples to a 2-inch depth to determine pH, and to a normal 6.5-inch depth to determine phosphorus and potassium needs.

Since limestone is not mixed into the soil mechanically, make lime applications at least 6 months before seeding to produce a pH change in the rooting zone. In addition, because phosphorus and potassium are not mixed with the soil mechanically in a no-till seeding, apply them before seeding as well.
