Weed Management

Final Weed Survey

Make a final weed survey in late summer. Because weed infestations may not be uniform over the entire field, make observations in several locations and draw another weed map or update the previous one. You usually can obtain an accurate assessment of the weed problem by walking through parts of each quarter of the field and recording observations along the entire route.

Do not make generalizations based only on the edge of the field or on places where weeds typically exist, such as along waterways or in low, poorly drained areas. The weed survey should provide a summary of the general weed infestations throughout the field.

Once you have determined the extent of each infestation, rank the weed species from the most to the least commonly found. Then, by knowing the various weed species present and choosing an appropriate management strategy, you can implement a planned cropping system and weed control program for each field.
