General information:

Herbicide1 Application2 Product/A lb ai/A Remarks

Authority 75DF
or
Spartan 4F (sulfentrazone)
Preplant or preemergence 4.0–5.3 oz
or
6–10 fl oz
0.19–0.31 Authority/Spartan contains the single active ingredient sulfentrazone. Authority/Spartan controls certain broadleaves, so tank mix to broaden control spectrum or use within a planned pre followed by post herbicide program. Do not apply Authority/Apartan if soybeans have emerged, otherwise severe crop injury will result. (Water quality advisory)
Command 3ME (clomazone) Preemergence 1.33–2.67 pt 0.5–1.0 Command 3ME must be used as a preemergent soil-applied treatment without incorporation. Do not apply within 1,200 feet of towns; residential areas; commercial fruit, nut, or vegetable production; or commercial greenhouses or nurseries. Follow recrop restrictions (Table 2.4-15). See label for other restrictions.
Dual II Magnum 7.64E/Cinch or Dual Magnum 7.62E (s-metolachlor) Preplant or preemergence 1.0–2.0 pt 0.95–1.9 Dual and Cinch are similar in activity to Outlook and Micro-Tech. Dual II Magnum contains a crop safening agent for corn. The medium soil texture rate is 1.33 pt/A for Dual II Magnum and Dual Magnum. For early preplant applications or fields with heavy surface plant residue, Dual rate may need to be increased by up to 20%. Incorporation improves control of yellow nutsedge. Dual Magnum can be applied post at 1–1.33 pt/A from emergence to 3-trifoliate stage. Dual will not control emerged weeds. (Water quality advisory).
FirstRate 84WDG (cloransulam) Preplant or preemergence 0.6–0.75 oz 0.5–0.63 oz Cloransulam provides good control of several annual broadleaves including lambsquarters, pigweed, ragweed, velvetleaf, and cocklebur. Apply FirstRate at 0.6 oz/A on soils with <3% organic matter or up to 0.75 oz/A on soils with >3% organic matter. (Water quality advisory).
Lorox 50DF (linuron) Preemergence 0.75–2.0 lb 0.38–1.0 Do not incorporate. Do not use on sands or loamy sands, or on soils with less than 0.5% organic matter. Plant seed at least 1.75 inch deep on flat or raised seedbed, or crop injury may result. Do not apply after soybean emergence. A grass herbicide may not be required in no-till double crop soybeans.
Micro-Tech 4ME (alachlor) Preplant or preemergence 2–4 qt 2–4 Micro-Tech and Partner are both encapsulated formulations of alachlor. They are similar in activity to Dual, Outlook, and Axiom. The medium soil texture rate is about 2.25 qt/A. For early preplant applications or fields with heavy surface plant residue, increase the rate of alachlor by 20%. Incorporation improves control of yellow nutsedge. (Restricted-use pesticide and water quality advisory)
Outlook 6.0E (dimethenamid-P Preplant or preemergence 10–21 fl oz 0.47–0.98 Outlook is similar in activity to Dual and Micro-Tech. The medium soil texture rate is 16 fl oz/A for Outlook. For early preplant applications or fields with heavy surface plant residue, increase Outlook by 1–2 fl oz/A. Lower use rates, 6–16 fl oz/A for Outlook, may be used in situations where control or reduced length of residual control is required, such as early post applications or pre followed by post herbicide applications. Incorporation improves control of yellownutsedge. Outlook may be applied postemergence with certain tank-mix partners. See label for additional information. (Water quality advisory)
Prowl 3.3E (pendimethalin) Preplant or preemergence 1.2–3.6 pt 0.5–1.5 Do not exceed 2.4 pt/A rate when using surface application. Under certain environmental conditions, preemergence applications may cause callus tissue development at soil line, resulting in lodging. Prowl should be incorporated north of I-80 due to stem callus and possible lodging concerns. Incorporation improves control of shattercane and seedling Johnsongrass. Do not apply postemergence to soybeans.
Prowl H2O 3.8CS (pendimethalin) Preplant or preemergence 2–3 pt 0.95–1.4 On medium soils do not exceed 2 pt/A when applying a pre surface treatment at planting or up to 2 days after planting. Do not make preapplications north of I-80. Increase rate if incorporating or for preplant applications. Do not apply post to soybeans.
Pursuit 2S or 70DG (imazethapyr) Preplant or preemergence 4 fl oz
or
1.44 oz
0.63 Adequate soil moisture is necessary for optimum activity. Do not plant corn until 8.5 months after application. Read label for other rotational restrictions. Do not apply products containing chlorimuron imazaquin during the same season, or injury to rotational crops may result. See “Herbicide Resistance Management” in Part 2, Section 1 for more information. (Water quality advisory)
Python 80WDG (flumetsulam) Preplant or preemergence 0.8–1.33 oz 0.04–0.066 Flumetsulam is available as a single active ingredient in Python WDG. Python WDG may be tank-mixed with other herbicides to broaden the spectrum of control. Check individual herbicide labels for potential tank-mix partners. Do not apply where soil pH is greater than 7.8. Do not apply postemergence to soybeans. Check Table 2.4-15 for recrop restrictions. See ”Herbicide Resistance” in Part 2, Section 1 for more information. (Water quality advisory)
Scepter 1.5AS
or
70DG (imazaquin
Preplant or preemergence 0.66 pt
or
2.8 oz
0.125 Incorporation improves control of velvetleaf and consistency in dry years. However, incorporationmay also increase carryover potential. Do not plant corn for 9.5 months following application. Read label for other rotational restrictions. Do not apply products containing chlorimuron or imazethapyr the same season, or injury to rotational crops may result. See “Herbicide Resistance Management” in Part 2, Section 1 for more information. (Water quality advisory)
Sencor 75DF (metribuzin) Preplant or preemergence 0.3–0.5 lb 0.2–0.4 Do not use on sands or loamy sands or on soils with less than 2% organic matter, or crop injury may result. Soybean varieties have different levels of tolerance to metribuzin; refer to product label for list of susceptible varieties. Metribuzin is a triazine herbicide and does not control triazine-resistant weeds. Potential for crop injury may increase if atrazine was used the previous year due to the additive effect of residual atrazine and metribuzin. Do not apply after soybean emergence. A grass herbicide may not be required in no-till double-crop soybeans. (Water quality advisory)
Treflan 4E (trifluralin) Preplant incorporated 1.0–2.0 pt 0.5–1.0 Incorporate thoroughly to a depth of 2–3 inches within 24 hours of application. Two-pass incorporation is desirable.
Valor 51WDG (flumioxazin) Preplant or preemergence 2.0–2.5 oz 1.0–1.28 oz Valor is similar to Authority and controls many common annual broadleaf weeds. Apply Valor at 2–2.5 oz/A preemergence. Valor may be tank-mixed with certain herbicides to broaden weed control spectrum. Do not use more than 3 oz/A of Valor per season. Do not use Valor in soybean fields where products containing flufenacet (Axiom, Domain), alachlor (Micro-Tech, Lasso), metolachlor (Dual), or dimethenamid (Outlook) will be used or crop injury may occur. Valor at 1–2.5 oz/A, can enhance the speed of burndown and increase weed spectrum of typical burndown herbicide programs.
Herbicide1 Application2 Product/A lb ai/A Remarks
Mixtures
Axiom 68DF (flufenacet + metribuzin) Preplant or preemergence 7–13 oz 0.3–0.55 Axiom is a mixture of flufenacet plus metribuzin (Sencor). Axiom use rates of 7 to 13 oz/A will provide only early-season weed control of grasses and some broadleaves. For best results, tank-mix or apply a postemergence treatment for additional control. Do not make more than one Axiom application per season. Do not graze or feed forage to livestock. Plant soybean 1.5 inches deep and do not apply postemergence to soybeans. Refer to label for other use restrictions. (Water quality advisory) Flufenacet is available as a single active ingredient in Define and is primarily effective on annual grasses. Define is weak on yellow nutsedge. The rate range is 8–14 fl oz/A Define 4SC soybean and should be used with other herbicides for a broader spectrum weed control system.
Boundary 6.5EC (s-metolachlor + metribuzin) Preplant or preemergence 1.2–3 pt 0.98–2.4 Boundary contains s-metolachlor (Dual Magnum) plus metribuzin (Sencor) and controls many annual grasses and broadleaves, but not triazine-resistant species. The medium soil texture rate is 1.9 pt 6.5EC. Lower rates may be used in a planned pre followed by post herbicide program. Plant soybeans 1.5 inches deep and do not apply postemergence to soybeans. Certain soybean varieties are sensitive to Boundary; refer to label for all use restrictions. (Water quality advisory)
Canopy 75DF³ (metribuzin + chlorimuron) Preplant or preemergence 4–8 oz 0.19–0.375 Adding chlorimuron to metribuzin (Lexone/Sencor) improves control of ragweed, cocklebur, velvetleaf, jimsonweed, and annual morningglory. Do not apply after soybean emergence. Do not use Scepter or Pursuit during the same growing season. Do not use on soils with a pH greater than 6.8, or carryover injury may result the following year. Observe labeled crop rotation restrictions (see Table 2.4-15). See “Herbicide Resistance Management” in Part 2, Section 1 for more information. See Table 2.4-1 for other chlorimuron-containing mixes. (Water quality advisory)
Envive 41.3WDG (chlorimuron + flumioxazin + thifensulfuron) Preplant or preemergence 2.5–5.3 oz 0.06–0.13 Envive is a premix that includes chlorimuron (Classic), flumioxazin (Valor), and thifensulfuron (Harmony SG). Envive is designed to provide some burndown and residual weed control when applied two weeds before planting up to three days after planting (before soybean emergence). It can be applied at 2.5–5.3 oz/A (plus necessary adjuvants) preemergence and provides suppression/control of common broadleaves. For improved control of certain weeds it may be necessary to tank-mix with 2,4-D, glyphosate, paraquat, or Express. Do not use Envive in soybean fields where products containing flufenacet (Define, Axiom), alachlor (Micro-Tech, Intrro), metolachlor (Dual), of dimethenamid (Outlook) will be used, or crop injury may occur. Do not apply Envive if beans have begun to emerge. Splashing soil from heavy rainfall may cause injury to newly emerged soybeans. Envive may be followed by a postapplication of glyphosate, Classic, Synchrony, Reflex/FlexStar, or a postgrass herbicide to control any escapes. Envive can also be used in a fall burndown program in front of soybeans. Enlite is similar to Envive but contains less chlorimuron for rotation-sensitive areas.
Prefix 5.3EC (s-metolachlor + fomesafen) Preplant or preemergence 2–3 pt 1.3–2 Prefix contains s-metolachlor (Dual Magnum) and fomesafen (Reflex) for annual grass, nutsedge, and broadleaf control. Prefix at 2–3 pt/A can be used in conventional or RR soybean systems. In most situations, Prefix provides foundational weed control but will likely need to be followed by additional weed control measures. Be cautious of restrictions associated with fomesafen use in consecutive years and lower use rates in southeastern PA. Refer to label for additional use restrictions.
Pursuit Plus 3E (imazethapyr + pendimethalin) Preplant or preemergence 2.5 pt 0.94 At 2.5 pt/A, Pursuit Plus is equivalent to 1.44 oz of Pursuit DG and 2 pt of Prowl. Do not plant corn 9.5 months after application. See remarks under Pursuit and Prowl and check Table 2.4-15 for recrop restrictions. See “Herbicide Resistance Management” in Part 2, Section 1 for more information. (Water quality advisory)
Sonic 70DF/Authority First 70DF (sulfentrazone + chloransulam) Preplant or preemergence 3–8 oz 0.13–0.35 In RR soybeans, apply 3 oz/A Authority First or Sonic pre followed by glyphosate post. In conventional soybeans, apply 6.45–8 oz/A. If used in a total pre program, Authority First or Sonic will need to be tank mixed with an appropriate herbicide to control grassy weeds and nutsedge. They provide residual control of common broadleaf weeds. They can also be used as a fall burndown application in front of soybeans.
Valor XLT 40WDG (flumioxazin + chlorimuron) Preplant or preemergence 2.5–5 oz 0.063–0.13 Do not mechanically incorporate Valor XLT into the soil after application. Valor XLT has some burndown activity, but it should be tank-mixed with glyphosate or paraquat in most cases. A rate range of 2.5 to 5 oz/A, depending on weed species, is included on the label. Valor XLT can be tank-mixed with products such as pendimethalin for improved grass control. Do not use Valor in soybean fields where products containing flufenacet (Define, Axiom), alachlor (Micro-Tech, Intrro), metlachlor (Dual), or dimethenamid (Outlook) will be used, or crop injury may occur. Do not apply Valor XLT if beans have begun to emerge. Splashing soil from heavy rainfall may cause injury to newly emerged soybeans. Valor XLT can be applied as a fall (after November 15) or spring preplant treatment or preemergence. Products containing flumioxazin have specific tank-cleaning instructions on the label or in technical bulletins to help avoid contaminant injury from spray tank residues. See “Hebicide Resistance Management” in Part 2, Section 1 for more information. See Table 2.4-1 for other chlorimuron-containing mixes.
  1. See Table 2.4-1 for additional formulations or trade names containing some of these same active ingredients.
  2. Preplant herbicides also may be applied preplant incorporated.
  3. Lower rates are reduced rates that may require additional postemergence control.
